The Greater Jackson Arts Council (GJAC) is pleased to announce the selection of Brice Media (comprised of married artist team Talamieka and Charles Brice) to create a cultural landmark heralding the renaming of Davis Magnet Elementary after President Barack Obama. A review panel that included Dr. Kathleen Grigsby (Principal), PTA representatives and a highly accomplished local artist made the final decision from a pool of open-call applicants.
In May, the City of Jackson, Community Foundation for Mississippi and the Greater Jackson Arts Council teamed up for a Service Saturday. Citizens were invited to join in and paint positive words about Jackson. Over 100 Jacksonians of all ages came out to make their mark on the wall.
In late 2017, Downtown Jackson Partners and Gadow Tyler Law Office funded the creation of the iconic "Welcome to Jackson" that debuted weeks before the opening of the Museum of Mississippi History and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum. The mural serves as a banner of hospitality for the citizens and visitors.
